My Irish Hiking Headband
Since I was asked for it and I don't mind to share, this is the pattern for the Headband I made to match my Irish Hiking Scarf.
Yarn: Lion Wool, color Winter White or any other color of your choice
Needles: Straight #8us
Irish Hiking Cable Pattern:
Row 1 (WS): K2, P2, K2, P6, K2, P2, K2
Row 2 (RS): K4, P2, K6, P2, K4
Row 3, 5 & 7: As Row 1
Row 4 & 6: As Row 2
Row 8 (RS): K4, P2, C6F, P2, K4
Instructions:
Provisional Cast On 18 stitches. (KnittingHelp.com Tutorial Video)
Work Rows 2 & 3 once and then Row 8 (Cabling row)
Then, repeat the 8 rows of the IH Cable Pattern for about 19 " or whatever fits around your head comfortably minus 1 inch, ending with Row 5. I made 16 repeats for my Headband.
Join using Kitchener Stitch. (KnittingHelp.com Tutorial Video)
HINT: Measure the circumference of your head in the area you would wear a headband with a strand of yarn and then measure the yarn.

That looks almost like a panta I made once. Except well...it was panta like and pink. lol It was also made of Microspun....

As the temp starts to drop here in Chicago a nice wool headband will come in handy! Thanks for sharing! You should submit this pattern to the Island of Misfit Patterns. islandofmisfitpatterns.com

I discovered this past week that I am going to HAVE to have something to cover my ears on my morning walks! I'm hoping to fit this headband into my knitting schedule!

thanks for sharing the pattern! I needed a general idea of how to construct a headband and remembered you created one out of the IHS pattern. :)

Your instructions say to Work Rows 1 & 2 and then row 8 -- wouldn't this put a cable row on the wrong side, essentially putting it on row 3? I'm new to knitting, and I'm confused.

Elaine - Row 1 is worked as the Right Side of the work, row 2 is then the Wrong Side of the work - therefore, the 3rd that has to be worked as Row 8 (cabling row) in on the Right Side again.
I hope this helps... Let me know if you have any other question.

Love the headband...did one similar & could not figure out how to sew the ends togather
"neatly"...what with having knit sts & purl sts intermixed using the "K" stitch........
so starting with the Provisional cast-on is the trick! thank you for sharing this pattern

Isabelle, when you said "Row 1 is worked as the Right Side", did you mean to knit row 1 or did you mean to knit the row that's labeled (RS)? I am suffering from a similar confusion as Elaine. I suspect that you want us to "Knit row #2, row #1 from pattern, then row #8", as this is what you would normally do before a cabled row in your pattern.
Being rather brave about cabling and loose ends, I actually managed to successfully pull off your pattern by skipping your introductory step and grafting a cable row to my first row #1. I'm really happy with how it turned out, and I want to thank you for the pattern! I've made a few now, in different colors.
As for knittinannie, if you have trouble grafting knit and purl rows when they're intermixed, why not try turning the work inside out (and possibly upside down, depending on your perspective) when you get to those pesky purl stitches? That way, you can continue to graft the usual way. If you work under a good light, you should be able to catch any mistakes quickly.

OOPS! Sorry about that, Maura and Elaine...
I reviewed the pattern and corrected the instructions. Corrections are in red.
Thank you, Maura, for pointing that mistake to my attention. I hope you didn't suffer too much! LOL
